In October of 2008, Senator John McCain nearly missed a Presidential election debate because of his commitment to
helping the American economy by rescuing the banking system. A bill that faced strong opposition was filled
with pork and pet projects to give each Senator and Representative who voted for the bill an excuse to give his constituents
why he (or she) passed the bill. There were provisions for “green” technology and various tax
increases and tax cuts that in no way pertained to the struggling banking system. There were obviously
three categories of voting representatives that week: those in strong favor of government funded banks, those strongly opposed
to the TARP legislation and have read and follow the US Constitution, and those who follow or are bought. “Earmarks”,
“pork” and pet projects have been created for the third category of “representative”.
Later
that evening, Senators Obama and McCain both defended opposite positions about the same bill, as they did with several other
bills in their past, especially the legislation that addressed funding troops in Iraq. As
they both continually defended their records, it became painfully obvious that legislation is not written to address the needs
and wants of constituents, but to pay for re-elections through earmarks and to contain enough contradictions to muddy a representatives
intentions enough that American people can no longer tell what legislation is really about and who is voting in their interest
(if anyone is).
The simplest solution is in the spirit of our founding fathers: limited government. The government
limits everything we touch; it’s time to limit how our elected officials vote. Reform Politix proposes
that new legislation should address only one topic per bill. This would allow the American people to know
which candidates have voted in accordance with their principals and would drastically reduce pet projects and wasteful spending.
After the Stimulus plan (HR
1) and the Omnibus Spending plan (1105) passed early in 2009, inspired by Rick Santelli, Reform Politix decided to hold a
tea party here in Memphis, TN. Over 4,500 people attended on a Wednesday afternoon on April 15 in Audubon
Park. Mike Fleming of 600 WREC and Paul Shanklin, political satirist who provides material for Rush Limbaugh,
broadcasted live from the Tea Party that was one of over 200 events on tax day 2009. The organizing of
this event led to the creation of the MidSouth Tea Party, a group devoted to freeing America from the trend towards Socialism
and returning it to the values of our Founding Fathers.
Tired of Government
limiting you? It’s time to limit the government. !
